Welcome to Faculty Professional Development programs at CSU, San Bernardino. These programs are administered by the Office of Academic Personnel under the advisement of the Faculty Professional Development Coordinating Committee, a Faculty Senate Committee. The grant awardees are determined by blind review on the part of College Professional Award Committes. Please use the buttons on the left to explore faculty development at CSUSB.

Membership

FPDCC is a Faculty Senate Committee with representation from five academic schools and the Library.

Mission

The mission of the Faculty Professional Development Coordinating Committee is to provide leadership and support for professional development so that faculty at CSUSB can better educate students, increase knowledge within and across academic disciplines, and improve the life of the community served by CSUSB.

Goals and Objectives

1. Promote a campus ambiance of collegiality, scholarly interchange, and principled inquiry that is disciplined-based as well as cross-disciplinary;
  a. Host faculty development events throughout each academic year which invite scholarly exchange
  b. Host faculty development events throughout each academic year which promote skills in such areas of academic career development as professional writing, grant proposal authorship and mentoring
  c. Model collegial exchange by committee decision making processes which reflect both discipline-based representation and interdisciplinary interchange
2. Support opportunities for professional development that correspond to the needs of the faculty;
  a. Assess faculty professional development needs periodically through means of survey, focus groups, or other means
  b. Encourage FPDCC members to regularly poll constituent faculty and administrators to seek their input on and support for programs and initiatives
3. Allocate faculty development funds in such a way as to maintain the highest degree of fairness and concern for merit; encourage maximum faculty participation in faculty development programs;
  a. Allocate state funds for professional development to various funding categories (Minigrant, Summer Fellowship, and Paid-Term Leave) in a manner that maximizes the opportunity for individual faculty to be funded in a category for which they submit
  b. Allocate other professional development funds in ways that fulfill the mission of the committee
  c. Encourage school-based Professional Awards Committees and other awarding committees to utilize objective means for determining proposal merit and for offering feedback to faculty members who submit proposals
  d. Promote recognition for outstanding achievement in faculty development
  e. Allocate professional development funds in a manner that uses these funds to match or leverage other such funding
  f. Participate in activities and events that help CSUSB faculty to gain recognition in a larger arena such as the CSU system
4. Coordinate with other committees, administrators, and campus agencies in the disbursement of funds for faculty development;
  a. Coordinate with Academic Personnel to ensure that FPDCC initiatives are consistent with the Procedures and Criteria for Performance Review and Periodic Evaluation
  b. Coordinate with Graduate Studies, Research, and Faculty Development as the office that administers faculty development funds
  c. Coordinate with Sponsored Programs to maximize the opportunities for faculty to apply for and receive external funding as a result of faculty development-related activities
  d. Coordinate with the Instructional Quality Committee and the Teaching Resource Center to integrate faculty professional development activities and initiatives with those that promote teaching excellence
5. Circulate and foster discussion of various meanings of faculty development and make decisions in the light of contemporary research on human growth and development through the span of a professional career.
  a. Invite collegial input from experts in faculty development, life span psychology or human development/career development in order to promote discussion of current research in professional development
  b. Invite input from campus leaders on issues of professional growth and development
6. Explore and recommend additional sources of funding, both on and off campus, for faculty professional development;
  a. Coordinate with Sponsored Programs to identify off-campus sources of funding for FPDCC initiatives and other faculty development programs
  b. Coordinate with the Office of Development to explore off-campus sources of faculty development funds
  c. Coordinate with academic deans and other administrators to explore and recommend on-campus and off-campus sources of funds
7. Monitor expenditures for faculty professional development purposes.
  a. Request budget accounting periodically from the Office of Graduate Studies, Research, and Faculty Development
  b. Appoint a FPDCC member as treasurer yearly to monitor budget
8. Maintain a record of FPDCC activities in order to provide a history of the committee and an ongoing orientation for new members
  a. Maintain an archive of FPDCC documents
  b. Orient new members yearly to FPDCC history and responsibilities

Duties

The Faculty Senate has stipulated the duties of the Faculty Professional Develeopment Coordinating Committee in a document know as the "Charge to the Committee." It is available for review in the Faculty Senate Office.

As representatives, FPDCC members act as a voice from their constituencies, bringing forward their faculty development needs or suggestions, and occasionally going back to the faculty to garner support for, or participation in, FPDCC initiatives.

Meetings

The Committee meets approximately three times per quarter.

Administrative Liaison

Rowena Santiago, Teaching Resource Center serves as administrative liaison to the Committee.

Budget

The FPDCC budget is prepared by the Office of Academic Personnel and monitored by the FPDCC treasurer.
