| Background The Teaching Resource Center (TRC) aims to promote effective and innovative instruction and to provide services that lead to excellent teaching and active learning for 21st Century learners. The Center is dedicated to the vision of an academic community engaged in active learning. Active learning involves increased teacher-student interactions, student- student interactions and content -student interactions. It considers the diverse characteristics of 21st Century learners. It is characterized by accessibility and flexibility. It utilizes both technological and non-technological resources in the design, development and delivery of instruction. This brochure describes briefly the center's mission, goals and services. The Director welcomes requests for additional information or assistance.

| Training The center organizes workshops on teaching strategies and innovations. The Center provides special support on technology integration with the assistance of CSUSB's ITI (Instructional Technology Initiative) Teams, faculty members who received training as "trainer of trainers" through the ITI program of the Chancellor's Office.

| Consulting and Referrals The Center offers individual, confidential help regarding instructional design and the development of instructional materials. It assists faculty in assessing their own teaching, e.g., by videotaping a class session. It also assists faculty in locating and accessing teaching resources on campus.

| Transfer and Dissemination The Center promotes mentoring among colleagues and will assist in arranging faculty visitations. Through newsletters and on-line homepages, the Center reports on grant activities related to instructional development and learning productivity. Teaching strategies and innovations by CSUSB faculty are also featured. The Center sponsors exhibits of faculty projects related to teaching strategies and innovations.

| Special Projects and Services The Center has initiated a program called Faculty-Student Assistant Support Service (FSA Service). This provides assistance to faculty members who are implementing an instructional innovation involving technology. The Center and the Library are partners in a project on Information Competency to assist faculty in implementing and integrating information literacy skills among students. A three-year program for New Faculty is conducted by TRC in cooperation with the Office of Academic Personnel. The program supports new faculty in developing their individual agenda on teaching strategies appropriate to their field of study. The Center also provides follow-up services for its workshop participants. This is provided either individually or through group discussions using list serves. Spring Colloquium This annual event showcases faculty activities related to teaching strategies and innovations. It will include paper presentations, symposia, faculty exhibits, poster sessions, and demonstrations. Grant Awards The Center provides grant awards for projects that focus on both technology and non-technology based teaching strategies and/or increase learning productivity. Faculty Resources The Center is building a library that will include a collection of books, newsletters, journals, video tapes and other publications on teaching and learning. The Center's list of its collection will be available on-line through its homepage. It is also developing an on-line faculty resource file to connect faculty with recognized expertise in some aspect of teaching with those who request assistance from the Center.
